Views from the Balcony

Thursday, November 9, 2008

Living in a city rooftop apartment has certain disadvantages.

  1.  There are stairs to climb whenever the elevator is out of order.
      (extremely rare)

  2.  It takes a bit longer to retrieve a bottle of wine from the basement cave or to take out the trash.
      (thankfully the elevator works)

  3.  We smell cigarette smoke from the tenant below whenever he smokes on his balcony.
(okay as long as he tolerates the occasional vibration from our washing machine)

  4.  The entry area to the apartment is hot like a sauna during the heights of summer.
(it's actually quite cool inside the apartment)

  5.  The tandem doesn't fit in the elevator and must be carried up the stairs.
      (fortunately that's Eric's job) grin

The advantages of living in this apartment more than compensate for the minor shortfalls mentioned above. We have high ceilings, plenty of light, and the added bonus of a clear view over most of the neighborhood buildings. The latter has given me opportunities to take interesting photos of the Jura, the Salève, and the city.

My favorite photo subject is sunset over the Jura in the direction of Bellegarde. On a semi-cloudy day, the colors one sees are simply amazing.

This is a collection of my favorite balcony photos.
